SIENNA CRETACOLOR DRAWINGS WITH WASH

Rather than being influenced by a single “style,” these drawings were inspired by artists from three historic art periods:

The first is the period of Italian Mannerism, singling out Pontormo and Bronzino whose work emphasized gesture and fluidity of line.

The second period is French Academic drawing and painting, particularly Girodet, who adhered to Pythagorean and Euclidian geometry.

Finally, these drawings are indebted to the Modernists, especially Cezanne, who stressed the importance and power of negative space in composition.

Though these works are drawings, they could as easily be called paintings. I have chosen the former label because these drawings emphasize line to define each subject.

Because of their indelible nature, these lines drawn with brush and paint, relate more to ink rather than graphite drawings. The inability to erase requires a focus and clarity of execution that is meant to convey each subject’s strength through simplicity.

However, to add visual interest and suggest volume through light and shade, I have added a burnt sienna wash to each drawing.
