When Sleep Is Elusive was the fourth triptych I created for this series. At this point deadline pressures were beginning to take a toll. The creative effort was becoming exhausting as I was teaching full-time on Manhattan’s Upper West Side while also daily hurrying to my Union Square studio to create the artwork. As a result, my rest time became uneven as sleep became elusive.
Observing the imagery more closely, one can see swimming fish that appear in this and in many of the triptychs. Fish have various cultural and religious meanings. However, paralleling the title of this triptych, I have intended the fish symbolism to also remain elusive and leave the interpretation up to the viewer.
